  • Sustainable Printing: New Findings on Embellishment Recycling by FSEA
02 Oct 2024

In today’s world, sustainability is a necessary commitment across industries, especially in printing. One of the challenges in sustainable printing has been the confusion around the recyclability of embellished paper products. Traditionally, embellishments like foil stamping or metallic decorations were perceived as barriers to recycling, but recent studies from the Foil and Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) are dispelling these myths. Two new studies commissioned by the FSEA demonstrate that metallic embellishments can be recycled effectively, opening up new possibilities for sustainable design and packaging.

Who is FSEA?

The Foil and Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) is a leading organization in the print embellishment industry, dedicated to promoting and educating the market on advanced finishing techniques such as foil stamping, embossing, and specialty coatings. FSEA has long championed the role of embellishments in adding value to print materials while also addressing sustainability and other industry concerns. By conducting studies on recyclability and repulpability, FSEA is providing valuable data to prove that beautifully embellished materials can also be environmentally friendly. In addition to its educational initiatives and advocacy for sustainable practices, FSEA is also known for hosting the prestigious Gold Leaf Awards, which celebrate excellence in the use of foil, embossing, and other specialty effects in print.

Recycling of Fiber-Based Materials with Transfer Metallic Decoration

The first study, conducted by Van Dyk Technology Center and commissioned by FSEA, focused on the recyclability of transfer metallic decorated materials, such as those used in folding cartons and greeting cards. Transfer metallic decorations include embellishments like hot foil, cold foil, and digital foil transfer processes. The study tested various fiber-based products with metallic finishes to determine how they are sorted and recycled in Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).

Through extensive testing, including advanced optical sorting systems, the study found that all of the samples—ranging from 25% to 75% metallic coverage—were successfully sorted as fiber materials and included in the recycling stream. This means that metallic decorated products do not end up in landfills, as previously feared, but are instead processed for recycling. The results provide encouraging news for brands and designers looking to create visually striking products without compromising on sustainability. Repulping of Foil-Decorated Paper

The second study, led by the Georgia Tech Renewable Bioproducts Institute, explored the repulpability of foil-decorated paper. The goal was to evaluate whether metallic foils interfere with the repulping process, a crucial step in paper recycling. The research tested foil-stamped Coated-One-Side (C1S) card stock with various levels of foil coverage, ranging from 50% to 100%.

The results were promising: 75% of the decorated paper was successfully repulped, and over 98% of the aluminum content from the foil was removed during the process. The physical properties of the reclaimed fibers were comparable to those of typical recycled paper fibers, proving that foil-decorated paper can indeed be repulped without issues. This study further dispels the misconception that foiled products hinder the recycling process, offering a sustainable path forward for foil-embellished packaging and print materials.
